Professional dental treatment of cavities in the center of Oslo

With a quick treatment of caries, the disease can be stopped before there is any tooth decay.

Holes in the teeth occur as a result of acid from bacteria that damage the teeth. Then we have to clean the area that is attacked and possibly add a landfill.

When teeth are damaged due to bacteria, it must be treated. The actual place where the damage occurs can look like a hole. We usually call this a hole in the teeth or tooth decay.

This is how cavities occur in the teeth

Cavities in the teeth (caries) are caused by bacteria found in the mouth of all people. The bacteria form a plaque on the teeth, almost like a "film" where the bacteria live protected, often in places with uneven surfaces and areas with inadequate cleaning. The plaque itself consists of microorganisms from the bacteria we have in our mouth mixed with particles from saliva and the food we eat.

When bacteria break down carbohydrates, they also produce acid. This acid breaks down the tooth enamel so that the lime disappears. This happens every time we eat. If the acid load becomes too great, caries is formed.

Treatment of cavities in the teeth

Caries does not necessarily mean that you get cavities in your teeth. If it is detected early, you can stop the development by brushing your teeth extra well, avoid sugary foods and drinks and rinse with fluoride.

If parts of the tooth are damaged by caries, we must remove the damaged tooth tissue and insert a filling (link to our page Filling). The filling restores the shape and function of the tooth in addition to preventing the hole from becoming even larger. You can choose between different types of fillings based on what is best suited in each case.

Sometimes the tooth is so broken that we have to make a crown.

Invisible dental filling

Composite is the most common filling. The tooth-colored plastic material contains small porcelain grains which improve the properties of the plastic. In addition, it provides increased durability. Since porcelain is available in many color variants, we find a color shade that is very close to your natural tooth color. This means that the filling is barely visible.

How to avoid cavities

You have great opportunities to avoid caries if you follow a few simple tips:

  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste morning and night
  • Floss, toothpick or middle brush every day
  • Eat at regular meals and avoid snacking
  • Reduce your intake of sugary foods and beverages

Signs of cavities in teeth

You do not necessarily notice that you have cavities in your teeth, but if the cavity is large you can get toothache or icing in your teeth. It is often noticed especially if you alternate between hot and cold food or drink, or when you chew.

Over time, the caries injury can lead to inflammation of the tooth margin (pulpitis) which causes intense, throbbing pain. Therefore, it is important that you contact us quickly if you suspect cavities in the teeth, so that we can clean the tooth and possibly add a filling.

You can often see the actual hole in the tooth as a brown discoloration on the enamel.

Support in the treatment of cavities in the teeth

All children in Norway receive free dental treatment from the public sector. Adults must initially pay for themselves, but there are exceptions. It is the dentist or dental hygienist who assesses whether you fall under any of the exceptions and thus is entitled to support from Helfo if you need treatment for cavities.

Here you can see who is entitled to benefits for dental treatment.
