A veneers is a very thin "shell" that can be attached to the tooth if damaged or discolored. You can also use a veneers if you have a tooth with an unwanted shape or a large gap between two teeth.
More and more people are taking advantage of the opportunity to use shell facets. This is not so strange, since shell facets look natural and do not require long or extensive treatment. Today, shell veneers are a common form of cosmetic dentistry.
Shell facets are also called porcelain facades, porcelain veneers and porcelain facets. The natural reason for these names is that the shell facets are made of thin porcelain. Although not more than 0.3 to 0.5 mm thick, they are very strong.
Who can use shell facets?
Shell facets can be a good solution in most cases where you are not comfortable with the appearance of one or more teeth. With shell facets you can, among other things
- get small spaces closed
- cover discolorations and fillings
- make yellow teeth brighter
- straight out crooked teeth
This is how we make and adapt the shell facet
In order for the result to be the best possible, all shell facets are shaped by hand so that it fits exactly to the surface of the tooth to which it is to be attached. It is this time-consuming work that ensures that your teeth appear neat and smooth.
When you are with us for the first time, we take a cast of the shape of the tooth to be covered and find the right color. Before you come to us next time, the shell veneer will be shaped after the tooth. The next time you come to us, we try the shell facet and together we discuss whether it is the right shape and color, and check that it does not feel wrong or hurt. When you are satisfied, we glue the shell veneer on the tooth itself.
We have extensive experience with shell facets so you can be sure of a good result.
Cleaning teeth with shell veneers
You do not need to do anything special even if you have a veneer, but continue to brush your teeth well to have good oral hygiene. It is important that you are careful with the cleaning so that there are no complications such as gingivitis or cavities in the teeth. You should also have a regular check-up at the dentist to check that the shell veneer is in place.
How often do I have to change the shell facet?
If you have good oral hygiene, the shell facet can last for many years. The reason is that porcelain has properties that are very similar to the natural tooth enamel that is on the top of our teeth. Thus, the shell facet becomes almost like a new, extra layer of enamel.
Disadvantages of shell facets
For most people, it is unproblematic to have shell facets, but there are certain conditions that can affect the service life. Sometimes problems occur:
- The shell facet breaks
- When chewing, a facet can be exposed to large forces. If the load on the shell facet is incorrect over time, it can cause the porcelain to eventually break.
- Caries in the underlying tooth
- There can be no holes in the shell facet, but holes can occur in the tooth below where the facet is located. If the hole is large, we have to make a new facet or put on a crown. We repair a small hole with a filling.
- The shell facet loosens
- Rarely does the shell facet loosen. Usually it can be glued back in place. If you have a shell facet that comes loose, it is therefore important that you take care of it and take it with you to us as soon as possible.
If you have a tooth that is very reduced, we do not recommend putting on a shell veneer. Then a penny may be a better solution.
This costs a shell facet
Since each shell facet must be made individually, it does not matter how long it takes depending on how complicated the work is. Therefore, prices will vary somewhat.
